How to Overcome Fear

How to stop being fearful

We all have some level of fear. Even the most courageous executives of the thousands I have coached, over the last 18 years, clients with tens of  thousands of employees, reluctantly all admit they have some level of fear. Fear is a natural human condition. But it does not need to “drive our show”. When we experience fear, we often have butterflies in our stomach. The solution is to empower the butterflies to “fly in formation” toward our dreams, not “run our show” from a place of fear and confusion.  This starts as just a personal decision.  Not an easy one.  Let me be honest. I have not mastered this completely yet, and may never, however, I suspect, no one has, and no human ever will. Yet, I have seen massive success happen  in my life, personally, and with my clients in this arena. We desperately want to live our lives to be “comfortable”.  But, life is not comfortable!.  We have to find something more powerful than fear to overcome the “fear” problem. The antidote to fear, in my opinion, is passion. If we consciously focus on our fear, it only grows larger. If you  focus on being over-weight, then you may feel guilty, and thus eat more to comfort the pain of guilt.  If you focus your mind on what kind of body you want, then you have a greater chance to create the body you want.  If you worry about something, we often can “accidentially” source that fear into our reality. Just like if we focus on our passion, we create our passion into reality. We can “brainwash” our own minds.  If we focus on passion, and nurture it until it becomes larger than fear, then fear gets pushed into the shadows of our life- only then does it not “drive our show”.  Here is the conundrum. Our mind wants to avoid pain!  The precursor of pain is fear. Since our mind desperately wants to avoid pain, it wants to generate and listen to our fear.  I know this may seem crazy. But we get to control our thoughts, moment by moment, by what we allow to be entertained in our mind. We do get to choose to control our thoughts. This seems like difficult and consistent work. It is!  Here is an exercise: “look at your shoes” right now. Study them. Where did you buy them? How much do you like them? Why do you like them?  What color are they?  Do you see how I took your mind away? I controlled your thoughts by asking a question. If  I can control your conscious thoughts, then why can’t you?   You can choose to think about what you want to think about in any moment. It is a choice. What do you choose to focus on? Do you want to choose to think about the; past, guilt, failure, or the future?  When you choose to focus on what you want, in every moment, instead of what you’re afraid of, it leads your mind to focus on where you’re going, instead of what you’re afraid might happen. Why do we have the phrase; “I was afraid of that?”  Zig Ziglar, a great motivationaly speaker recently past away. I saw him live in 1974.  He said one thing that stuck with me: “Don’t suffer from the disease of ‘stinkin thinkin”.  What we consciously focus on ultimately drives our end result emotions!!!!  Our emotions drive our lives, because they drive our actions. Our consistent actions drive our results. Like I said, it’s not easy. But I say, it is worthwhile. Because it’s your life. Stand guard at the door of your mind as to what you think about. Most people live their lives on autopilot. Do not be a reporter covering the story of life, instead be an author who re-writes the story of your life. Hope this helps. Let me know what you think.
